US throws curveball in Japan's play for Russian energy

TOKYO -- The Obama administration's new economic sanctions on Russia could frustrate Japanese efforts to tap into the country's vast oil and gas reserves and force Tokyo to rethink its post-disaster energy strategy.

     Unlike earlier penalties for Russia's intervention in Ukraine, the latest salvo seeks to crimp the access of big banks and energy companies to dollar funding.
