Chinese vets demand better benefits in Beijing protest

BEIJING -- Around 1,000 Chinese military veterans gathered in front of defense ministry headquarters here Tuesday to protest for better benefits at a time when the country is slashing troop levels.

Many of the camouflage-clad protesters are thought to be over 30. Several said they had gathered to petition for better veterans' benefits. A large number may have come from outside Beijing for the protest, as many spoke with accents not native to the city.
