TPP debate kicks off in Japanese parliament

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe defended the TPP in Tuesday's lower house session.

TOKYO -- Japan's lower house began debating the Trans-Pacific Partnership and related legislation Tuesday, taking on what will likely be the biggest issue before the Diet in the latter half of the current session.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing to get the bills passed within the session, arguing that the trade agreement will provide a sustained 14 trillion yen ($126 billion) boost to gross domestic product.
