YANGON -- Myanmar, a mosaic of more than 130 ethnic groups, will not go easily toward State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi's goal. This was apparent after a few days of talks toward that goal -- nationwide peace -- inside the Myanmar International Convention Center II, in the capital of Naypyitaw.

Mosaic? The gathering was a tapestry of traditional costumes: Girls from the Shan ethnic group wore beautiful headdresses decorated with silver and feathers. Young men of a Chinese minority group in the Mong La region donned bright blue dresses. And elderly men belonging to the Naga ethnic group appeared in tall hats adorned with bull horns.
