TOKYO -- A majority of the Japanese public supports the Bank of Japan's decision last week to raise the policy rate to 0.5%, the latest Nikkei-TV Tokyo opinion poll finds.

The 25 basis point increase announced Friday was the BOJ's first rate hike since July 2024 and the third in a year amid broad price and wage growth. The move lifted the rate to levels not seen since 2008. Respondents agreeing with the increase outnumbered opponents by 54% to 34%.
