NEW YORK -- When Chinese President Xi Jinping met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris last week, members of France-based Chinese student group Le Front de la Liberte received phone calls from their parents back home, asking about their upcoming activities and urging them not to do anything that could embarrass Xi.

One of the founders, who requested to be called Bu, told Nikkei Asia that the authorities had summoned his parents up to six times throughout the bilateral visit. His parents were warned that if Bu continued to misbehave, it would be difficult for them to visit him in Paris and that their pensions could be affected.
