HONG KONG -- Chinese officials are closing or forcibly remodeling mosques, a report by Human Rights Watch alleges, extending what critics consider a crackdown on Islam and freedom of religion.

Mosques in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Gansu province in the north have had their domes and minarets removed and parts of the buildings have been razed based on a 2018 official blueprint to tighten control over or "Sinicize" Islam, HRW says.
