BEIJING The U.S. strategy to back North Korea into a corner remains incomplete after President Donald Trump met with East Asian leaders through Nov. 9, as China balked at the more forceful approach accepted by Japan and South Korea.

Trump appears ready to do more than wait for economic sanctions to take their toll on the North, telling Chinese President Xi Jinping in talks on Nov. 9 that the countries must go beyond their current strategy of applying pressure peacefully.
