Chinese Communist Party woos next generation with comics

New history accentuates the positive while airbrushing out Tiananmen crackdown

The Cultural Revolution and other unflattering parts of the Chinese Communist Party's past take a back seat in its new comic-book history, bottom center.

BEIJING -- Amid the ongoing celebrations of its centennial, China's ruling Communist Party is turning to comic books to capture the hearts and minds of its children.

"A History of the Communist Party of China," published under close supervision from a party organization, hit shelves in September. The 217-page book outlines accomplishments under several decades of its one-party rule, using graphics and simple sentences geared toward children.
