BEIJING -- Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu has been gone from the public eye for a full month, fueling speculation over his whereabouts and stalling China's defense cooperation with partners.

Li was appointed defense minister in March despite of having been under U.S. sanctions since 2018. He is also part of the Central Military Commission, China's highest decision-making body on military matters, led by President Xi Jinping.
