SHAOSHAN, China -- Crowds gathered to celebrate late Chinese leader Mao Zedong's 130th birthday Tuesday here in his birthplace, with some shouting slogans dating back to the Cultural Revolution.

Visitors began flocking to Shaoshan in Hunan province the day before. They placed flowers in front of a bronze statue of the Communist revolutionary at a local plaza, bowing their heads before the monument much like worshippers would at a Buddhist temple.
