HANOI -- The Vietnamese government on Wednesday named Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh as acting president, following the death of Tran Dai Quang, becoming the country’s first female head of state.
Thinh will serve as president until the post is filled by the National Assembly in late October.
A state funeral for Quang, Vietnam's No. 2 official, was held in Hanoi the same day. He died last Friday of an undisclosed illness, state media reported.
Attendees at the funeral included Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam's top official, and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, as well as former Secretary General Le Kha Phieu and former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue and Tran Quoc Vuong, executive secretary of the party's secretariat, are seen potential permanent successors to Quang.
