Rapid political changes in Myanmar may not have yet transformed the governance of that complex society, but they represent a major shift in the distribution of political power. This has occurred largely because of the charisma and determination of the country's new de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, supported by popular dissatisfaction with the ubiquitous role of the military in the country's administration.
