SYDNEY -- Australia will broaden its military recruitment to permanent residents as it attempts to address a shortfall in defense personnel, the government announced Tuesday.

Starting in July, New Zealanders who are permanent residents of Australia will be eligible to join the Australian Defence Force. Next year, intake will expand to permanent residents from the U.K., the U.S., Canada and other countries.
