TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A Chinese aircraft carrier entered the contiguous zone just outside Japan's territorial waters for the first time Wednesday when it sailed between remote islands in southern Japan from the East China Sea, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

The ministry confirmed that the Chinese Navy aircraft carrier Liaoning and two destroyers passed southward through the contiguous zone between Okinawa Prefecture's Yonaguni and Iriomote islands early Wednesday and headed for the Pacific but did not enter Japanese territorial waters.
