TOKYO -- U.S. President Donald Trump's grievances about the cost of defending American allies have raised the question of whether Japan should reconsider the long-rejected option of possessing its own nuclear weapons.

In March, former high-ranking officials from Japan's Defense Ministry and the Self-Defense Forces called for a debate on nuclear weapons that is willing to touch upon concepts once considered taboo.
