TOKYO -- Japan plans to boost support for the Philippines' surveillance activities in the South China Sea and lay the groundwork for an intelligence-sharing agreement to better keep an eye on China's military activities.

Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told reporters Friday that he plans to visit the Philippines from Saturday to Tuesday. He is set to meet with his counterpart on Monday.
