TOKYO -- The Japanese government on Friday designated information security and eight other critical fields for research and development that can contribute to a stronger national defense.

Defense-related R&D and infrastructure were on the agenda for Friday's discussion, the first ministerial meeting regarding Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's efforts to bolster defense capabilities.
