SEOUL -- North Korea said it launched a military reconnaissance satellite into space Tuesday night, confirming an earlier report by South Korea's military.

The official Korean Central News Agency said early Wednesday that the satellite had been successfully placed into orbit, though Japan's Defense Ministry said this has not been confirmed.
