MANILA -- Japan and the U.S. are deepening maritime security cooperation with the Philippines, assisting the country with patrol boat maintenance and joining joint training exercises as Manila faces territorial disputes involving China in the South China Sea.

The American and Japanese coast guards began the support exercises on Monday to help the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) create a maintenance manual for patrol vessels. Some details were shown to media outlets, including Nikkei.
