LA UNION, Philippines -- A new radar system installed on the northwestern coast of the largest island in the Philippines offers an "unobstructed view" of territory that has in recent months come under threat from China's aggression.

The air radar system, built by Japan's Mitsubishi Electric, started operations on Wednesday at an air base that looks out on the South China Sea. The move comes at a time when relations between China and the Philippines are increasingly fraught as Beijing has encroached on waters that Manila claims.
