BEIJING -- President Xi Jinping made a rare visit this week to a China Coast Guard headquarters in Shanghai that has jurisdiction over the East China Sea, vowing to boost the maritime security force's capabilities.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported the visit on Friday. At the base, Xi said the country would "resolutely protect China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests."
