France's stage is set for final vote with consequences for the world

This time at least, the pollsters got it right. Whatever the final tallies, the first round of France's presidential election on April 23 confirmed what the polls had indicated for weeks -- that Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen would emerge from a large field as the two candidates who would face each other in a second-round runoff on May 7.
