SHANGHAI -- Google is "welcome to return" to China provided it obeys the law, the official People's Daily stated on Monday, apparently signaling a willingness to deal with the American search giant, but strictly on Beijing's terms.

The opinion piece, however, had been removed by Tuesday evening from the Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece's Facebook page.
