Movie glorifying Modi raises controversy ahead of India’s election

Opposition parties say aim of biopic on prime minister is to influence voters

NEW DELHI -- A new movie on the life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is at the center of a political controversy in India, with opposition parties seeking to delay its release on the grounds that it could influence voters in national elections beginning next month.

The biographical film is a glowing portrait of the 68-year-old prime minister, who is depicted as a brave and heroic leader. The movie covers various periods of Modi's life -- from a tea seller in his childhood to becoming the chief minister of Gujarat state, and finally leading the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party to victory in the 2014 election and assuming the post of prime minister.
