India internet sector in fog after controversial VPN rules delayed

NEW DELHI -- India's internet industry is under a cloud of uncertainty after the government extended the compliance deadline on contentious new cybersecurity rules that have already driven some companies to stop doing business in the country.

The authorities earlier this year announced sweeping new requirements for virtual private networks (VPNs) and other online operators, initially giving them 60 days to comply. Under the new regulations, companies would have to report cybersecurity incidents within six hours, synchronize their clocks to those of the government and maintain system logs for 180 days.
