NEW DELHI -- In a major setback to India's opposition Congress party, its leader Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as a member of the lower house of Parliament, an official notice said on Friday.

A day earlier, a court convicted and sentenced Gandhi to two years in prison in a defamation case over his 2019 remarks involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname.
