JAKARTA -- From an El Nino cash aid to civil servants' first pay rise in five years, Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is mobilizing massive populist programs that would support the presidential bid of Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, giving the candidate an edge over his two rivals as the Feb. 14 election approaches.
Prabowo, 72, competes with former Central Java Gov. Ganjar Pranowo, 55, and former Jakarta Gov. Anies Baswedan, 54, for the top job. Jokowi, who is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, has not formally declared support for any candidate. But with his two sons in Prabowo's camp, there is little doubt that the president prefers Prabowo as his successor.
