JAKARTA/KUALA LUMPUR -- The secretary-general of Indonesia's only opposition party is facing a politically controversial trial after a Jakarta court denied his request to dismiss a bribery case.

The South Jakarta District Court on Thursday rejected a pretrial motion filed by Hasto Kristiyanto of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who has denied wrongdoing. He claimed the legal system was being abused to persecute him for political reasons, and pointed the finger at former president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo as the mastermind behind it.
