JAKARTA -- Indonesians are heading to the polls on Wednesday morning for the country's biggest local elections ever, with more than 1,500 candidates vying for leadership posts in over 500 administrative regions.

This is the first time that Indonesia is holding elections for governors, mayors and regents across the country simultaneously since direct votes for regional leaders were introduced to the world's third largest democracy about 20 years ago.
