SAN FRANCISCO -- The APEC CEO Summit in San Francisco has brought together private sector and political leaders, and one exhibition in particular captures the occasionally fraught relationship between those two worlds: a booth offering free samples of fresh scallops flown in from Hokkaido paired with Japanese sake.

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), a government agency, set up the exhibition as part of Japan's efforts to boost seafood exports following the release of treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in August. The release sparked safety concerns, and some countries have banned Japanese seafood imports.
