KUALA LUMPUR -- ASEAN is grappling with the threat of disunity, as Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appear to prioritize personal ambitions over the bloc's collective goals, analysts warned.

Foreign ministers of the 10-member grouping of Southeast Asian countries gathered for a retreat on Sunday on Langkawi island in Malaysia, marking the opening of the country's role this year as the chair and setting its narrative of "inclusivity and centrality." The reality of the dynamics surrounding the bloc, however, is far more complex.
