BRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Central European leaders Thursday to promote economic cooperation as Tokyo lays out an alternative to China's vision for development in the region.

"Japanese companies will continue to keep their eye on the V4's potential and strengthen economic ties," Abe said at a news conference, using an abbreviation for the Visegrad Group countries Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
