KOLKATA -- A rocky election season in Bangladesh is highlighting the divergent interests and diplomatic approaches of India and the U.S., as well as the interplay between the strategic partners and their shared rival, China.
Both Washington and New Delhi say they support a democratic and stable Bangladesh, which is due for a general election on Jan. 7. But the two powers have adopted very different ways of showing it, as a Bangladeshi opposition boycott, unrest in the streets and past allegations of rigging overshadow the polls.
