BEIJING -- China's new foreign relations law provides greater legal backing for countermeasures against actions that impact its sovereignty and security, potentially paving the way for further sanctions targeting countries like the U.S.

The Law on Foreign Relations, which takes effect Saturday, is the first piece of legislation to lay out the China's basic diplomatic principles.
