HONG KONG -- Human Rights Watch on Tuesday issued a fresh warning on continued abuse of minority Uyghurs by Chinese authorities, just as a reported appointment to a key diplomatic post in Washington raised questions over the Donald Trump administration's stance on the issue.

The New York-based nonprofit group documented severe travel restrictions on Uyghur citizens. Its report said that although Beijing had started allowing some Uyghurs to apply for passports, returning ones that were arbitrarily confiscated, and allowing those living abroad to visit their northwestern home region of Xinjiang, it continued to impose restrictive conditions.
