TOKYO -- China is marking time as the Israel-Hamas war tests countries' diplomacy in the Middle East, eyeing any opportunity to use the conflict to its diplomatic advantage, according to a former Pentagon official.

Randall Schriver, who served as the assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs under former President Donald Trump, spoke on Saturday at the Mount Fuji Dialogue in Tokyo, an annual gathering of political and business leaders from Japan and the U.S. hosted by the Japan Center for Economic Research and the Japan Institute of International Affairs.
