Guterres, pick for UN chief, spurs hope on Syrian refugee crisis

UNITED NATIONS -- Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres was nominated to become the next U.N. secretary-general Thursday amid high hopes that his decade-long experience heading the United Nations refugee agency will lead to an effective response to the growing crisis in Syria.
