NEW DELHI -- Plans for an India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), first floated in 2023, are taking shape as the U.S. and others seek an alternative to China's Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, though funding and geopolitical hurdles remain.

The two segments of the project, connecting India with the Persian Gulf region and the Gulf with Europe, will result in "a transformative integration of Asia, Europe and Middle East," Kirti Vardhan Singh, an Indian minister of state for external affairs, said in the country's parliament on Dec. 20.
