WASHINGTON -- China will not succeed in winning the kind of trust the U.S. currently enjoys with Japan and South Korea even as Beijing seeks to resume a trilateral summit, U.S. deputy secretary of state nominee Kurt Campbell said on Thursday.

"I'm confident that China will be unsuccessful in building the kinds of bonds of trust that we're doing now with Japan and South Korea," said Campbell at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing. Campbell is currently White House coordinator for the Indo-Pacific.
