WASHINGTON -- South Korea and Japan will serve together on the United Nations Security Council in 2024 for the first time in 27 years, presenting a "wonderful opportunity" to cooperate on global issues, a key South Korean diplomat visiting Washington said this week.

Envoys from Seoul and Tokyo sitting together on the Security Council have a chance "to talk about not only North Korean issues, but also global issues," Lee Shin-wha, South Korea's ambassador for international cooperation on North Korean human rights, told an event on Tuesday hosted by the Hudson Institute think tank.
