WASHINGTON -- The outlook for the trade section of the U.S.-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework looks increasingly dim as American politicians woo voters skeptical of free trade ahead of this fall's presidential election.

As a result, the U.S.-led effort to counter Chinese economic influence in the Indo-Pacific region is itself becoming a barrier to that effort.
