Jamaican foreign minister dismisses Chinese 'debt trap' worries

Kingston wants balanced foreign development funding but Beijing aid is key

TOKYO -- Jamaica is not overly reliant on Chinese investment, its minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade told Nikkei Asia on Wednesday, dismissing fears that the Caribbean nation could fall into a "debt trap."

"Jamaica has been very strategic in our engagement," Kamina Johnson Smith said of her country's relations with China in an exclusive interview in Tokyo ahead of meeting her Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa.
