TOKYO -- Japan's prime minister said the Japan-U.S. alliance is "the cornerstone" of its multilateral security cooperation amid mounting concerns over military activity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Shigeru Ishiba spoke in a video message played on Saturday to the Mount Fuji Dialogue in Tokyo -- an annual gathering of political and business leaders from Japan and the U.S. hosted by the Japan Center for Economic Research and the Japan Institute of International Affairs.
