TOKYO/LONDON -- Emperor Naruhito and King Charles III emphasized the close ties between Japan and the U.K. and looked forward to future exchanges between their peoples during a state banquet in London held Tuesday for the visiting Japanese imperial couple.

Naruhito, accompanied by Empress Masako, became the third emperor invited to such a British state banquet, and the first in 26 years. He wore a sash indicating his appointment to the Order of the Garter, the U.K.'s highest honor, which he had received earlier in the day.
