TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is preparing to visit the U.S. for his first meeting with President Donald Trump, looking to start the relationship off on the right foot with discussion of increasing imports of American shale gas.

Washington has proposed a meeting in the first half of February, within Tokyo's preferred time frame and before Trump's expected first address to the U.S. Congress this term on March 4. Ishiba will determine the date, based on the parliamentary schedule.
