BANGKOK -- The Maldives' incumbent president, Abdulla Yameen, faces an uncertain political future after voters in Sunday's pivotal presidential election in the strategically located Indian Ocean archipelago threw their suppport behind opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Even before the final votes were tabulated in South Asia's smallest country, Solih was claiming victory in a campaign marred by the oppression brought on by the incumbent's unbridled drive to secure a second, five-year term.
