Message to Trump -- no TPP renegotiation

Asia-Pacific states should welcome back the US but only on original terms

| Japan
U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 25.

Having taken the U.S. out of the almost-concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership less than a year ago, President Donald Trump is now saying that he might rejoin -- but only if he can get a better deal.

But for Trump the art of the deal is a zero-sum game: If he renegotiates and secures better terms, this can only be at the expense of the other 11 countries that are pressing ahead with implementing an agreement without him.
