BANGKOK -- Chinese President Xi Jinping commended Thailand on its recent actions against criminal syndicates running online scam centers along its borders, in a meeting with visiting Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Thursday.

It was a marked difference in tone from a visit to Thailand last week by Chinese Vice Minister for Public Security Liu Zhongyi, who reportedly scolded Thai security officials for failing to close leaks of its power and telecom resources across the border to Myanmar. Thai and Chinese officials claim thousands of people -- including their nationals -- have been trafficked to so-called scam compounds in Myanmar and forced to defraud victims around the world.
