MANILA -- The Philippines and U.S. are set to hold a meeting of their top diplomatic and defense officials in Manila in "late July," Nikkei Asia has learned, in a bid to bolster ties in the face of China's maritime aggression.

Sources familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia that the 2-plus-2 meeting is being scheduled for "late July."
